Generation Y is spending beyond its means, living on credit and being sucked into making impulse purchases, a national survey of shopping habits has found.

The new generation, aged 18 to 25, has a penchant for credit cards, according to the poll of 1001 young men and women.The independent survey carried out for finance company GE Capital found:

70% of Gen Y respondents preferred spending money on themselves, compared with 48 per cent of all other age groups.

71% of Gen Y said they were impulse shoppers, compared with 44 per cent of all others.

30% of Gen Y admitted they impulse shopped beyond their means, compared with 14 per cent of others.

76% of Gen Y said they waited for sales to do their shopping, compared with 61 per cent of others.
